We did Hainan years ago as a 3 day 2n ight trip out of Hong Kong. It was a Chinese guide so I didn't understand a word (my husband is Chinese from HK, but I'm 4th generation Canadian - English only). The cost was really cheap - $1009 Canadian for 3 people for everything. Airfare, hotels, food, etc. (We took my mohter-in-law)

Hainan is beautiful. Like a very under developed Hawaii. Actually, there were unfinished and deserted hotels on the beach waiting for the big tourist bust that never came.

We stayed at two hotels, one in Sanya but I can't remember their names. They were beautiful. The 2nd one was further north and had a hot spring feeding the biggest swimming pool I had ever seen.

The only down side I would say was the food. It was okay but nothing special. But then I understand this part of the country is very poor so their best was not just up to our usual standards.

We did "the end of the earth" which I beleive Shanghainese called "lands end". It is a very beautiful beach with huge rocks all over it. There is red writing on the rocks as this is where people were sent when they fell out of favour with the Emperor. This was beleived to be the furtherest point from Beijing that one can get. Wow, what a place to be exiled to.

I can't remember too much more but my husband & I have been thinking of going back for a visit on our own and either rent a car or a driver and car. This will have to wait for now as we're off in September for a 12-day tour of Beijing, Xian, Guilin & Shanghai and then back to Hong Kong to visit family for another 12 days
